Short answer
When desire disappears, most men quietly assume something is wrong with them or with their relationship. Usually it is neither. Libido is one of the first things the body switches off when it is exhausted, stressed, poorly slept, or low on testosterone. Desire is a luxury the body cuts when it is in survival mode. Restore the underlying system and desire generally returns on its own.
What you'll learn
- Why the body treats desire as optional
- The role of testosterone, stress and sleep
- Why this is rarely a relationship problem
- The confidence loop that keeps it stuck
- What can be rebuilt, and how
A man came to me and said, quietly, "Doctor, I do not even want it anymore. And I am scared of what that means about me." It is one of the loneliest things a man carries. So let us name what is actually going on.

Take the free 2-minute quiz →Desire is not a switch. It is a surplus.
Here is the idea that changes how most men see this. Your body prioritises survival above everything else. Heart, lungs, brain, keeping you upright and functioning through the day. Desire sits far down that list.
So when the body is running low, whether from exhaustion, stress, poor sleep or poor nutrition, it starts cutting the non-essentials. Libido is one of the first things to go. It is not a malfunction. It is the body doing exactly what it is designed to do: conserve.
Which means low desire is usually not a sexual problem at all. It is a whole-body signal, showing up in the bedroom.
The real reasons desire fades
1. Chronic stress
A body under sustained stress produces more cortisol, the stress hormone. Cortisol and testosterone work against each other. High stress over months quietly suppresses the very hormone that drives desire. This is why men in demanding periods of work or worry often notice desire vanish first.
2. Low testosterone
Testosterone is the engine of male desire. When it falls, libido usually falls with it, and it rarely comes alone. It often arrives alongside tiredness that sleep does not fix, low mood, loss of drive generally, and the disappearance of morning erections.
3. Poor sleep
Most testosterone is produced during deep sleep. A man sleeping five broken hours a night is not giving his body the window it needs to make it. Sleep is not a lifestyle detail here. It is where the fuel gets manufactured.
4. The confidence loop
This one is subtle and it traps many men. If sex has become a place of anxiety, perhaps because of erectile difficulty or finishing too fast, the mind starts to protect you by removing the wanting. If you do not want it, you cannot fail at it. Men experience this as "I have lost interest." What has actually happened is that the mind has quietly stepped back from a situation that hurts.
5. Lifestyle and health factors
Excess alcohol, smoking, very low physical activity, obesity, certain medications, thyroid problems and depression can all lower libido. None of these are moral failures. They are physical inputs with physical consequences.
Why "just try harder" fails
You cannot force desire. Trying to manufacture it through willpower usually makes it worse, because effort brings pressure, and pressure is the opposite of the relaxed state desire needs.
Desire is not something you push. It is something that returns when the conditions are right. The work is not on the wanting. The work is on the conditions.
How Ayurveda approaches rebuilding it
Ayurveda has never treated desire as a standalone thing to be forced. It treats it as an expression of overall vitality. When a man is rested, calm, strong and well nourished, desire tends to look after itself.
So the traditional approach works on the foundations: calming a stressed nervous system, restoring proper sleep, rebuilding stamina and energy, and using time-tested herbs that have traditionally been used to support male vitality and testosterone. My own formulation, Kamdev Modak, was built around exactly this idea, using five traditional herbs including Ashwagandha, Shilajit, Kaunch Beej, Shatavari and Gokshura, which Ayurveda has long used to support male energy and vitality.
The aim is not to switch desire back on artificially. It is to rebuild the man, so that the surplus returns, and desire comes back with it. Results vary from person to person, and a proper consultation is always the right starting point.

Why have I completely lost my sex drive? +
Libido is usually one of the first things the body reduces when it is under strain. Chronic stress, poor sleep, low testosterone, exhaustion, or an underlying health issue can all cause it. The body treats desire as non-essential and conserves energy when it is in survival mode, so low desire is often a whole-body signal rather than a sexual problem in itself.
Is low libido a sign of low testosterone? +
It can be, and it is one of the most common signs. Low testosterone usually does not arrive alone. It typically comes with persistent tiredness that sleep does not fix, low mood, reduced drive in general, and often the loss of morning erections. A qualified practitioner can assess whether this is the cause in your case.
Can stress cause a man to lose interest in sex? +
Yes. Sustained stress raises cortisol, and cortisol works against testosterone. Over months, this quietly suppresses the hormone that drives desire. This is why many men notice their libido disappear during demanding periods at work or times of prolonged worry.
Does poor sleep affect sex drive? +
Significantly. Most testosterone is produced during deep sleep. A man consistently getting five or six broken hours is not giving his body the window it needs to produce it. Sleep is where the fuel for desire is manufactured, so poor sleep hits libido directly.
Is losing interest in sex a relationship problem? +
Usually not. Most men who lose desire still love and are attracted to their partner. The fade is far more often physical, driven by stress, sleep, hormones or exhaustion. Sometimes it is also a protective response, where the mind steps back from sex because it has become a place of anxiety or perceived failure.
How does Ayurveda help with low libido? +
Ayurveda treats desire as an expression of overall vitality rather than something to be forced. The traditional approach focuses on calming the nervous system, restoring sleep, rebuilding stamina, and using herbs traditionally used to support male vitality and energy. The aim is to rebuild the underlying system so that desire returns naturally. Individual results vary.
When should I see a doctor about low libido? +
If your desire has significantly reduced for several months, or if it comes alongside persistent tiredness, low mood, or loss of morning erections, it is worth speaking to a qualified practitioner. These signs together often point to something addressable, such as hormone levels or sleep quality.
The bottom line
When desire disappears, your body is usually not broken and your relationship is usually not the cause. Your body is conserving, because something underneath is running low. Desire is not something you force back. It is something that returns when the man underneath is rebuilt.
